Word on the Street

1-2-2 Defense (wuhn-too-too dih-fens) noun. A zone defense where the defenders post up as a box and one defender in front at the 3-point line.

Usage example: “I guess the Celtics had to use a 1-2-2 defense against the Lakers when Shaq played.”

Word characteristics: The 1-2-2 defense is used when the other team has really good inside players, cutting of the lane to the basket and guarding the paint tight. On the downside this leaves wide open 3-point shooters if the defense aren’t fast enough.

Defenders 4 and 5 is the key, they need to communicate and lead the defense.
