Word on the Street

2-2-1 Defense (too-too-wuhn dih-fens) noun. A zone defense when you have a great shotblocker on your team. Four players post up as a box and the center is guarding the basket.

Usage example: “The old Philadelphia 76ers used a 2-2-1 defense when they had Dikembe Mutombo.”

Word characteristics: Set up a ordinary box with your defenders (1-4), then have your (5) defender guarding the post. the object is to drive the offensive teams guards to the shotblocker in the back using the baseline.

Defender number 5 is the key. He has to tell the other four defenders where he wants the opponents guard to go.
